2011 has flown by!!!

Wow Time has flown by this year and i havent written on my blog for a while now, been busy in the lab getting the new Yoof Riddims ready for next year + other various projects.

October was a busy month promoting the King yoof international E.p. and one of the highlights was playing on Londons longest running pirate radio Kool fm. I have played on many legal stations such as Kiss fm and Radio 1 but when you get asked to play on the station that you grew up on since 1992 then thats a big ting!!!

The whole show was hilarious (Thanks Tamsin) and the phone line/chatroom went crazy for my new tunes  with rewinds being asked for every tune i played lol, the studio went into meltdown BIG TIME! even the c.d decks gave up.

11.11.11 was a date i will never forget as it was my birthday weekend...
I had been asked to Dj alongside Jay Cunning and Mc Ken Mac for a Sub slayer's showcase at Epidemiks 16th birthday bash @ the o2 arena in the main room and the place went off!
Want to thank Grant @ Epidemik for putting on one of the best raves ive been to in a long time and for giving us the platform to showcase our sound unlike some promoters who just talk a good job... (promoters you know who you are. shame on you).

Yoof's Beat programming tutorial.




I thought id share some knowledge with some of you up and coming producers who have asked me to do tutorials on making some jungle breaks.

I’m not gonna do a you chuube video but ill go through it oldskool styleee and go through some of the basics on getting a decent beat going and how I chop my beats up + go through some of the processing.

Step 1. Finding your samples.
I come from the days of what is known as "Crate digging" a process of which I will go and find breaks and samples from random records, I would spend hours and hours + bucket loads of moneys buying old records from old record shops/ charity stores etc or if your name is Liam howlett then you have your own sample pimp LOL.

Today you can grab most decent breaks samples of the internet but be warned try and get the original source as the sound quality will be better or invest in a decent sample c.d. One of the best ones ive come across lately is Ray Keith’s sample pack on loop masters.

Step 2. Chopping your beats up.

For years ive always used Recycle to chop my beats up, I still love it today as back in the day before recycle you had to do your chopping manually and this would take hours especially when you did it all inside a akai/emu sampler. (Serious eyestrain lol).
Always get your start point bang on and then start chopping, I use the sensitive bar to get my basic cut points but will go in and cut manually as you will find a better cutting point. Once you have cut your break up I make sure no clicks can be heard when playing back and will then import into my sampler and save the midi file and export that into my sequencer.

Step 3. Sequencer and Sampler.
I use Logic as my sequencer and the inbuilt sampler called the ex24 but the principles apply to most other setup's so don’t start worrying.
Once the midi file of the break is imported into your sequencer and your samples loaded in your sampler make sure the attack is set to 0 in your sampler, never forget years ago being in the studio with Rennie pilgrim and the attack on his sampler had a factory setting of 25 and so the samples would play back strangely late
SO ALWAYS CHECK!

Also a good tip is if you want to make the break sound tighter then shorten the decay and turn off the release.
Go into your midi file and you will see the midi notes of the break, make sure you quantize the break and then start messing about with the notes, this is what’s gonna personalize the break and make it your own.
Experiment and explore the different possibility’s of what you can make your break beat do. Good tip is loop up different points of the break and you will get some interesting variations.

Step 3. Separating the samples.
Once I have a 8 bar or 16 bar Loop sorted I then start separating the samples, Logic has a cool shortcut that lets you make copy’s of your Ex24 and so then I start separating the Snares, Kicks, Hats etc so this gives me more control over the individual sounds.

Step 4. E.Q.
I start to clean the samples up with the E.Q. taking out any rumble of the bottom end, ringing out any horrible frequency’s that might be present. I have learnt allot from being around engineers such as Dave Pemberton and not to take to much bottom out of the Loop, allot of producers take to much bottom out and the break sounds flat and thin, I still like to maintain the original sound and the phatness of the break.
Try not to add to much E.Q, as it’s better to take away than add but for things like Snares you want them to sound nice and crisp and so boosting 200-250 Hz usually helps.

Step 5. Layering
Once I have my break rolling I start to layer the break up, allot of oldskool breaks just don’t have the punch that’s required for today’s production but layering them up with good quality super phat individual hit's will give them the punch that it requires.
Layer the kick drum of the break with a programmed kick drum, cut the bottom out of the sample kick so the programmed kick sits nicely with it, remember have your kick drums in mono and not stereo.
Also a good tip is to tune your kick drums, im pretty anal about this and spend allot of time tuning drums, its a bit of an art form in itself and just takes experience and a good ear but can make a big difference, good example of this is the Hybrid boys when they make their beats.
You can apply the same principle with your snares, hats etc.

Step 5. Grouping 
Now I have my break constructed I want to make it start to gel together and for this I group all the drums together by bussing of the channels to one group and setting the levels.

Step 6. Processing 
I’m not gonna tell you the exact way of doing this as everyone has there own way of doing things but applying subtle compression and limiting can help make the break sound phat and also another way of making your breaks gel together. 
Other interesting plug ins that can make your breaks sound good are transient designers and expanders.
Allot of people use the Psp vintage warmer but I find better results with the Wave's bundle's L2 Limiter, L3 Ultramaximiser and the Oxford E.q’s have a nice expander built in that just adds warmth.
A good tip as well is to add a subtle short reverb to the overall drum kit but go easy and be very subtle in applying this unless you want big phat dubstep drums lol.

Hope this helps when making your beats, like I said these are the basic principles to start with.

Jungle soundclash 1994 (Video)


What with Jungle breaks gaining popularity with the dubstep/drum and bass/breaks massive i thought id go back in time mainly to educate people that might not of been around the first time to experience such a magical moment in u.k raving history.

Back in the early 90's Hardcore was splitting into two, you either had Happy hardcore that became more popular up north or you had Hardcore Jungle which was more for the London (south crew). Nights like Jungle fever, Roast club, Awol dominated the Jungle scene with the foundation laid by the Pirate radio station's such as Kool and Rush Fm.
The Jungle sound had heavy influences from Reggae and Dancehall, bringing that oldskool sound system culture to the raves.

One of the most historical moments was the Jungle Sound clash of 1994 featuring Devious D, Mickey Finn, Dj rap, Kenny ken who all battle out in a boxing ring with Mc's Moose & 5-0 as referee's.
The Audience get to judge the winners by making the most amount of noise.

Yoof"s September Chuuune review

This month im only going to review one artist just purely because of who it is, how bloody good the tune is and how important role this artist has played when it comes to british underground dance music.

Back in the early 90's when Hardcore rave music ruled the country another sound started to mutate out of it from the ghetto's of London such as hackney, This sound had started to move away from the Happy techno sound but more towards the reggae/dancehall sound's of reggae... classic reggae basslines where being re worked, made bigger and more bashy, the beats got more sophisticated, vocal sample's from such great Dancehall dj's such as Ninjaman, Bounty killer, Beenie man, Cutty ranks etc where being sampled and re cut up..... Jungle music was born!

We have to go back to when the first wave of Jamaican people came to England bringing there sound of Reggae/Loversrock/Ska/Soul.
You coudnt hear this music on the radio and to be honest its very hard to here reggae on todays mainstream radio but thats another discussion in itself... so the people would build speaker boxes (sound systems) and throw underground parties which eventually through the years intergrated into british culture.

Without Reggae music and sound system culture you would not have dance music period!

Fast forward to around 1991 -92 and tunes like "Who's the badman" by dee patern, "28 gunman salute" by Guy called gerald and of course the godfathers of the scene Shut up and dance could be heard at every single rave.

While this was happening a very young Shy fx who started out as the teaboy/tape operator at SOUR records was messing about with beats and submitting them to the label without much success until he dropped a tune called "Gunsmoke" and then of course "Original nutter" which instead of sampling a well known dancehall artists he looked more closer to home and drafted in U.K. Apache on vocal duties and which to this day "original Nutter" can still be heard today.

Through the years Shy fx has lead the way, always setting the trend and never following!
He has made so many big big tunes that its hard to keep up with his output, his label Digital soundbwoy is probably my fav label at the moment just because of the diversity and quality of music he put's out!

So when Shy Fx starts making 140 Jungle breakbeats then you know things are big and boy has Shy hit the nail on the head with his new single due out this month on Ministry of sound called "Light up the world" feat vocal talents of Yasmin.



Tune starts with the classic film sample from the Harder they come and then bang a mixture of oldskool jungle beats, nuskool production, reggae basslines, soundclash samples and fx floods your head making any true Junglist feel like they have gone back to the golden age of clubs like AWOL, ROAST, JUNGLE FEVER etc

Yasmin's sweet vocals rides the tune in almost a Lovers rock style and complemented with the classic dancehall sample "Lighter!".
This tune will appeal to anyone and should be in every Dj's Box as like i said before when Shy fx is making this style then people need to wake up including Promoters, Dj's, label's.

This is what Jungle breaks is about, no disrespect to anyone but to be honest im hearing too many artists say they make Jungle breaks or Future Jungle (by the way that name sucks) and all they are making is not very good tearout which was done way back 2003 with labels like Mechanoise... So like i said when i heard "Light up the world" it restored my faith that the Jungle sound is here to stay and will make a big comeback in a different style.

YOOF'S AUGUST CHOON REVIEW .

Yeah i know i know, not written much in a while on my blog... been mad busy co producing a new band The Cry Baby with good friend and production legend Dave pemberton but hey more to come on that next month.

This month i was shocked to be sent so many good choons and kicking things off is Warrior one's E.p. feat Durrty goods & Royston williams out on Black butter records....

Warrior One brings us a killer E.p. with block party beats and bashment dancehall style beats being the order of the day.... Durrty goods delivers his durrty grime vocal to "The jump off" a wiked oldskool block party track that reminds me of the early London possee or blaps possee material.

On the flip is "Wavey" my fav track off the E.p. Precision futuristic bashment at its finest with excellent vocal delivery from Royston williams. This tunes makes you wonna boggle and do silly dances like the "gully creaper" or "willy bounce".

Stinkahbell "In your eyes" Sin city records

I Love Stinkahbell... have to thank my partner in crime Dj Raggs for getting me into them.
Stinkahbell is a male and female production duo who have made dubstep sexy, maybe im showing my age by saying this but i miss those tunes that you just wonna slow dance with someone. ok i am showing my age LOL.

Got to big up my brother (Jody mechanoise) for this monster of a choooon!!!
Brief history lesson: Jody was my partner in crime (Mechanoise/Breaksfm/Sonz of mecha) and moved to the States hooking up with Tom Williams to form Dubstep outfit Hellfire Machina.
"Good Love" is gonna be a massive anthem, big strings, big vocals and even bigger basslines make this track a must have for any bassline lover.

I think this track needs a Yoof remix...ahem

Why The Amen Break is so popular by Lee (guitarist for The Dirty rich


Ever wondered why the Amen break is so popular? 

The Amen break is a drum solo performed in 1969 by Gregory Cylvester Coleman in the song "Amen Brother" performed in the late 1960's funk and soul outfit The Winstons.


In this post i asked a good friend of mine Lee from The Dirty Rich http://www.thedirtyrich.com/  to give us an explanation and in depth analysis into "why the Amen break is so popular" and its connection with the Golden ratio or otherwise known as "God's thumbprint".


The Golden Ratio is a beautiful mathematical relationship that frequently appears in nature on every level of creation; including atomic structures, spiral galaxies, seashells and the rings of Saturn.

It is closely linked to the Fibonacci Sequence 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34… where every number is the sum of the two before it; click the link below to watch a video showing some of it’s natural occurrences:


Due to it’s perpetual prevalence, from the beginning of the universe to the very edge of it, this magical number has been nicknamed, ‘God’s Thumbprint’, and has been used for millennia by artists, architects and musicians trying to emulate natural harmony.

·       Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy, Schubert and Bach are a few that have applied the golden section to their masterpieces.

·       Gregorian Chants were based on 6 Solfeggio Frequencies, which have a magical healing resonance on the human mind, body and soul:

Pyramid. "Ready for blast off". Funkatech records

Inch and Ken mac aka Pyramid have been carving their sound for the last few years gaining support from both the breaks and dubstep scene.
By day ken mac is the flying scotsvan, west londons premo removal team and Inch sleeps alot making earbleeding bass and blowing up a regular 3 pairs of krk speakers every week.

when not blowing up speakers or moving problem familys out of crack houses the boys are reguarly bombarding crowds with killer beats and basslines. Ready for blast off is ferocious beast of a choon! The food blender bassline and ruffneck beats would make anyones hair stand up on end and your teeth grind down to pegs.
This is one for the end of the night lets go mental moments, reminds me of an early inch tune (ctrl z) "the darliks" but updated for 2011 and one for the jungle breaks massive.

Shy Fx feat Donaeo,Kano & Rose Gabbor "Raver" Shy's Guiness punch mix Digital Soundbwoy

I first heard David Rodigan play this last year and its been out for a while now but stays in my bag as its a great reggae track to end any dance.

I nearly had a heart attack the first time i heard this as it captures U.K. reggae at its finest and to be honest pissed over alot of modern day dancehall. My problem with alot of new dancehall is that its lost its bass...too many riddims sound like some bloody happy hardcore producer got on the dancehall tip and gave Movado some ketamine. but then i heard this and the bassline is so warm that you just want to find the nearest female and "wind up pon the gal".

Emalkay "Crusader" Dubpolice.
If like me you grew up in the early 90's on a heavy dose of Jungle/Hardcore then this will bring those memory's of saturday nights at AWOL or Pecknam's Lazer drome flooding back minus the bullet proof vest.
Tech steppin beats and ed rush style reese basslines are order of the day! Seems the dubstep massive are tiring of the one drop half time beats and bringing back the steppers that you would once hear on labels like Ghost.

Side-Projekt "Lift Dub" Family tree + Fused forces remix

Family tree is a new label delving into all things sublow, dirty and futuristic and the first release is a killer.
Imagine if george clinton went to a night at Dmz or Forward and came home and wrote some beats and you might be close to what this sexy sublow slab of funk might just sound like.
Essex Dubstep don's Fused Forces bring a more darker deeper remix making this an essential must have.

EL-B "Ghost chaser" L.P. Ghost

El sent us the album a while ago and every track is a killer, includes collabs with Caski,2nd2none,Wring and Dj Raggs but im gonna review Autobotz as El's not paying me enough to do a full review.
I love the way El keeps to his roots of production bringing that raw sound that dance music once had in the days of "midi"...dunno what it is with todays production? maybe to polished? i dunno and im not gonna get into it on this post. Autobotz is a jungle breakstep roller that brings that dark tech step vibe of the late 90's right up to date. Reminds of that no u-turn sound.

During the 70/80's i grew up in Lewisham (South east london) on a council estate, my Uncle was a massive reggae fan and collected vinyl in a big way. He would take me to concerts such as the reggae sunsplash events held at Crystal palace bowl and i was lucky enough to see artists such as Dennis Brown, david Rodigan, Sly and Robbie, Sugar Minot.
In Lewisham a regular night held by a sound system called Saxon studio sounds would throw regular events showcasing artists such as Maxi Priest, Tippa Irie, Smiley Culture and Papi Levi.

In 1992 Saxon took the Uk Sound Cup Clash beating Luv Injection, V- Rocket, Stereophonic but later in the year lost in a very controversial clash against J.A's Bodyguard Sound at the Roller express.
1994 Saxon beat King Addies, Kebra Negrus and 1993 cup holders Bodyguard in the 1994 World soundclash making Saxon the first U.K. Sound to win the worldcup.
Later Saxon had a re match with King Addies held in Bermuda which soon became one of the most remembered soundclash's ever.


King Addies main selector Babyface went in hard and beat Saxon, Trever sax made a mistake by playing the Bunny lie lie Dubplate with the classic "Give me a dubplate and let me mash dem down" vocal and claimed no sound in the world could play this dub..BAD MISTAKE, Babyface came back and played his version and the clash was won. DANCE LOCK OFF!!!


This soundclash was sampled to fuck by most of the Jungle producers during the 90's such as "when me a murda sound me play nuff girl choon" or "me gwaan murda unno again" both sampled by Remarc.
Also alot of intros from dubplates by Saxon and Addis have been sampled by artists such as Shy fx, Dj Hype, Shut up and Dance etc and without this clash then alot of Jungle anthems from back in the day would never of been dreamt off.

This is my all time favorite Reggae film and one that was sampled to fuck during the Jungle era, Yep this is the film that contains the sample "keep playing that jungle music allnight" that was used in Hitman + numerous other samples.
Also catch Jah shaka playing himself as the rival sound at the clash.

Babylon stands up today as a well crafted, convincingly acted, hard hitting piece of realistic drama. Babylon is a potent mix of music and social commentary. Yoof, one half of breaks outfit Sonz Of Mecha, has a solo release coming called King Yoof's International Hi-Fi on Sub Slayers. The EP features five tracks on the increasingly popular future jungle breaks tip. Yoof tells us all about it...
Please introduce yourself...
I'm Yoof from Sonz Of Mecha and I've been writing bass driven music for over a decade and have had releases on labels like Mechanoise, Ghost, Funkatech and Sub slayers to just name a few.
How would you describe your approach to making music?
To me it's all about the vibe and capturing that particular moment.
Tell us more about your forthcoming EP on Sub Slayers... what did you have in mind when you made it?
I wanted to bring back that old skool reggae soundsystem vibe that the original jungle movement had back in the 90s and fuse it with dubstep and breaks. I wanted an EP that would showcase the many different styles that I love.
Talk us through the tracks on it...
Back 2 Hackney - I wanted to pay homage to the original jungle dons from back in the day like Shut Up And Dance, Remarc, DJ Hype, Micky Finn, etc. I wanted to bring back the old skool way of chopping the Amen loop up and then I dug deep into my Soundclash tapes and sampled the classic Saxon v Addie's Bermuda Clash.
Gangland Riddim - This tune makes me want to rob banks! I was watching some documentary on street gangs and I liked the narrator's voice. I get asked a lot on how I made the bass for this but that remains a secret.
I'm On Fire - I wrote this with Jimmy King, the keyboard player from the Dirty Rich. These guys rock and are a new dance act worth looking out for, especially for their live shows. This track takes you on a more deeper, darker, futuristic journey and the bass took a few days to get right.
Murderer - A futuristic jungle breakbeat roller that gets any party going, yet again a tune that pays homage to such a great era.
One Bag Of Fuckery: This tune makes me smile every time I play it; it's a cheeky breakstep number that borders the line of dubstep and breaks. I'm a big soundclash fan, which you can probably tell from hearing the soundsystem rants that I sampled for the tune.


What else have you been working on recently?
I had a release on Ghost Records' 
Nu Levels album and I'm currently working with DJ Raggs who I met through El-B. I just mixed the latest EP for Kid British, a band from Manchester tipped as the new Specials. I also work a lot with Dave Pemberton who engineered and mixed The Prodigy, Groove Armada, etc and have some cool projects in the pipeline and more collaborations on the go.
Got any other releases in the pipeline we should look out for?
I've just finished recording a couple of jungle breaks tunes featuring guest vocals from Kid British and also Rachel Wallace but I'm keeping that under wraps until the time is right. You will probably see a follow-up EP before the end of the year and I've just done a VIP remix of John Connor for Ghost Records.

Dj Yoof aka Alex Orton-Green, one half of the legendary breakbeat outfit Sonz of Mecha boasts some serious credentials spanning over 16 years.

While tracks like ‘Gangland Riddim’ and ‘One bag of Fuckery’ bring the fire to the dance with skanking warped basses, warp drive half time beats. Acid house style bleeps and reggae tinged horns. Both tracks have been doing the damage from the U.K to the U.S.A.
Finally you have ‘I’m On Fire’ which features collaboration between Yoof and new kids on the block “The Dirty Rich”. ‘I’m On Fire’ delves into more of a deeper ambient mood, with apocalyptic soundscapes, spacious but weighty drums and a twisting bassline that even the harder end drum and bass veteran would appreciate.

Alex Orton-green aka Yoof one half of the legendry breakbeat outfit Sonz of mecha Boast’s some serious credential’s spanning over 16 years.
Yoof launched his uncompromising sound of killer baselines and razor sharp beats on his own imprint Mechanoise records back in 1999 when the first wave of Nuskoolbreaks had just emerged. Having unleashing the seminal 2000 nuskoolbreaks anthem “Rocweiler” which was used in the film score for the U.S. cult movie The Groove, changed the way Nuskoolbreaks was perceived and a more dance floor style of breakbeat was born.
As well as releasing on his own label, Yoof has had various releases on other labels such as Botchit and Scarper, Supercharged, Cyberfunk, Raveart, Bassrock, Southwest records, Funkatech, Ghost records and has also collaborated/remixed artists such as Rennie pilgrim, T-power, Fatman D, Ic3, Rza (Wu-tang clan), Demarco, Pyramid, Ctrl z, The Dirty Rich, Shut up and dance, J da flex, Dj Raggs, Kid british, Tayo, Dj Quest, Ed209, Lawgiverz.

Having pioneered a more harder dance floor sound to break’s, both Yoof and his brother needed a platform for this new movement to be heard, Breaks fm was born from being a pirate to a 5 time breakspoll winning internet station giving birth to such artists as Ctrl z, Breakfastaz, Jay Cunning, Caspa, Hotflush records + many other ground breaking acts.
Yoof was able to tour the world showcasing his sound from opening up Glastonbury 2007 dance tent for Radio 1 and Glade festival, supporting Uberzone on his European tour and also became a firm favourite in countries such as Spain who crowned him “Godfather of summer festival” after been given a residence at Spain’s biggest breakbeat festival.
2009 saw Yoof take his sound into the live band arena and formed his live act “The Sonz of mecha experience” and packed out the Seville Olympic stadium.
Fast forward it to 2011 and Yoof is back with a new sound, fusing breakbeats, dubstep, Jungle and Reggae into his own party rocking sets.
